Drafting - Film Poster Font Drafting
Our group discussed and researched different types of fonts that could potentially be used for the film's title. We went through pros and cons of the selected fonts until we came to the decision of choosing the final font to be used.
Magazine Production - Film Magazine Title Font Testing
For the film magazine front cover font; I had to make sure that it was similar to the magazine I'm planning to use as an inspiration which is 'Sight & Sound' magazine.
For the first font test; I thought it was quite similar to the font but it wasn't bold enough to be the title of the magazine so I didn't choose to use this one. It also looked more pixelated (similar style to the typography used for a type-writer so it was a bit old-fashioned).
The second font test was similar a bit more bolder than the first one but I couldn't use it since it was more blocked at the serif points.
The third font test was a bit different and compacted compared to the past two but it didn't really suit the style of the magazine since it had to be similar to the style of 'Sight and Sound' magazine.
The fourth font test had smooth serifs but I thought it still wasn't bold enough and wouldn't stand out enough for the title of the magazine enough though it looks neater to use.
The last font test was my chosen one since it was quite compacted together (the words), it wasn't spaced apart too much and it was bold enough to stand out which would appeal more to the audience.

Photography Analysis for Film Poster
Photo 1
This photo has been optioned to be a potential shot that will be used for my film poster. The reason to this is due to the lighting of how it shines on half of his face while the other side is shadowed. The audience may be able to depict that even though he's a priest and is supposedly meant to be good; he has a dark side which is hidden underneath all that shining goodness. The picture itself looks very bold and stands out from the page; if editing was added to the picture, it may even look more secretly devious and mysterious. However, the only problem I have with this shot is the fact that he's not looking directly into the camera. Eye-contact from a film poster may be able to captivate the audience's attention more rather than him focusing his attention away from the camera.
Photo 2
This shot has also been optioned to possibly be used for my film poster since it's an extreme-close up of an head shot with the model focusing directly into the camera. By having the model establish eye-contact with the camera; it also will appear as if he is attempting to establish eye-contact with the audience thus, drawing their attention towards focusing on the film poster. The lighting used was front-lighting in order to illuminate his face and get rid of any dark shadows that may be visible. The facial expression the model has used seems very calm. However, it gives some hints that he could be hiding something which is what will allure the public to want to watch the film and find out what it is this guy may be up to.
Photo 3
This was the shot I've decided to use for my film poster. One of the reasons due to this decision is because of the lighting used. A bit of low-key lighting was used in order to illuminate his face but still creates shadows in some areas. The light reflection of his face can also be edited to look brighter which gave myself the idea of adding fire to symbolise the depths of hell which depicts the irony in the film poster that a priest whose meant to be a servant of God could actually be doing the opposite of God's expectations. The facial expression shows how he may look innocent since he is a priest but however others don't see beyond the outfit and the appearance of a priest so they believe he is completely an loyal servant of God.

Photography Analysis for Film Magazine Front Cover
A front-close up shot of the model with minimum front lighting to create chiaroscuro but only just very minimal. The photography style used for 'Sight and Sound' film magazine mainly consists of front-shot images which are either a close-up, mid-shot or head-shot.
The photography didn't work out as planned since shot shows the top of her head being cut off; making it unusable for the front cover of the film magazine since the shot needs to show the complete head or it will make the front look very unprofessional.

Photo 2
This photography looks more preferable to use for a front cover magazine since there is front lighting from an angle thus creating shadows on the other side of her face. The lighting is able to show her facial expression which will link with the headline for the front cover since 'Sight and Sound' magazine uses their emotional-facial expression to link with the main story headline.
However, the problem lies with the facial expression the model is putting on. I've requested for an more determined expression but for this one; she was caught on the camera shot with a slight smile. This makes it unusable for the film front cover magazine since it won't link with the headline for the main story.

Photo 3
This photograph has the same preferences mentioned for photo 2. The lighting from an angle with the shadowing on the side of her face went as planned still.
Although, the only difference is the facial expression she uses. It symbolises more of a determined and serious look thus; it will link with the headline story for the film magazine. The shot used will make the front cover look more professional and similar to the style 'Sight and Sound' uses for the front cover of their magazine.

Planning - Photography plans with analysis (Film Magazine Front Cover)
Photography Plan for Film Magazine
'Sight & Sound' film magazine is going to be the influence for my own film magazine front cover creation. The photography used for their front cover consists mainly of male actors who seem to be aged between mid 20s to 50s. The shots that they mainly use are front-shots with close-ups and sometimes from an angle or mid-shots from the front. The lighting they use either consists of front lighting with very minimum shadows showing or side-angle lighting so that it creates an chiaroscuro affect on the other side of their face.
The majority of the shots consist of the model on the front cover to either look away from the camera or directly at it. However, even with the model looking at the camera; it can also seem as if they are looking at the camera but really they're looking on top of the lens of the camera so it gives the illusion that they're looking into the camera when they're really not.
The make-up used for the movie stars appears to be very natural since they are male so it would only be typically natural for male movie stars to wear very little make-up when it comes to doing photoshoots for more serious and formal film magazines.

Planning - Photography Plans with Analysis (Film Poster)
'The Rite' film poster will be used as an inspiration for the photography being applied to my own film poster.
The film poster shows clearly that it's a close-up shot of possibly the main character's face. This is what I am going to aim to do with my photography. A clear close-up shot of one of the main character's of the film. It'd most likely be a shot of the priest since his head will be inside the shape of a cross with the use of editing to emphasis the expression he is giving (as shown in the example poster).
I may experiment with other shots such as extreme close-ups in order to emphasis the importance of one of the main characters or I may do group shots while still applying them to the idea of them fitting within a cross template but trying to keep the emphasis of the importance for each main character being displayed.

Planning - Layout and Styling for film magazine and film poster
Layout plan for Film Magazine Front Cover
This is the layout for the front cover of the film magazine. I plan for the magazine to be influenced by the magazine 'Sight and Sound' thus, I will be attempting to follow the design style of the front cover of the film magazine.
Layout plan for film poster
The influence I'm using for my film poster is 'The Rite' film poster. The idea of the cross being the main focus with a close-up head-shot of the character also being the focus for the audience. The flames are meant to represent the fire of 'hell' since it's the opposite of 'heaven'. The crucifix is meant to seem appear as if it's being consumed by the flame thus; expressing that hell is devouring Christ.

Planning - Colour Schemes for Film Cover and Film Magazine
Colour Scheme for Film Poster
These are the colours I plan to use for my film poster seeing how the designs will include flames; it'll mean that part of the colours will involve red, orange and yellow (to represent the burning flames of hell). I'm planning to use a solid black background in order to make the focal image and the colours of the flames to stand out from the poster. If I was to use white, the flame may not be very visible and the outline of the cross for the picture won't be seen either.
Colour Scheme for Film Magazine Front Cover
These are the colours I'm planning to use for the film magazine front cover. Since I'm using the style influence of black-and-white, those will be the two main colours (which is what I hope the whole picture will be) while the other colours will be used for the typography and other conventions such as the masthead and sell-lines.

Planning - Text/Writing Drafting for Film Poster and Film Magazine
The font style for the film magazine title has to be similar to the style of 'Sight and Sound' has used.
The following shows a few fonts that are similar to the font style the 'Sight and Sound' magazine uses. The first font was almost identical to the exact font style the magazine used but the lettering was too spaced out and it was too thin to use for the title. By continuing the search for the right font, the second font style was another that caught my attention since the serifs on the typography also looked very similar to the one used for the official magazine and also it was bold so it'd be good to use for the title of the film magazine. However, even though the font style used a similar serif-style as to 'Sight and Sound', the style seemed very unprofessional to use for a film front cover magazine title. The third font style was quite similar to the second style but much more bolder and block-styled. The lettering was close together but a bit too close so it may be easy for the reader to overlook the title of the magazine since it's not eye-catching enough even with it being bold. The fourth font style was less bolder than the previous one and it was more spaced out. Once again, the reader may overlook the title if this font style is to be used since it's too spaced out and not bold enough to catch their attention. The last font style is the font style I have chosen to go with since it's bold enough to catch their attention and the lettering isn't spaced out too much. It's a bit different to the actual font-style 'Sight and Sound' use since the serif is more blocked rather than flicked.

Figure 2 |
These are the development of my initial ideas through
sketches. Figure 1 shows what the film poster demonstrates which is a rough
visual image of what the film poster may look like but I plan to develop this
idea further in order to make it more appealing for the audience. Figure 2
shows what the front cover of the front cover film magazine may look like but
as well as the film poster; I plan to develop the design even further by
changing and adding to the layout and context to make it more realistic.

Planning - Initial Ideas for Film Poster and Film Magazine Front Cover
Initial Ideas for Film Poster
For the film poster, I plan to use the influence from 'The Rite' film poster. Since the film trailer will be based upon religion and the genre is mainly stalker-slasher, the film poster would need some religious iconography as well as signs that it's an slasher-feature film. The focus of the film will be on the main characters which are the psychotic killer priest, the police detective and his trusty female assistant. Thus, the film poster may feature one of the main characters or all of them if it's possible. The colour scheme should depict the colours used for any symbolisms of murder as well as the dystopian future since that's the time era the film will be set in.
Initial Ideas for Film Magazine Front Cover

For the film magazine front cover, I plan to use the influence from 'Sight & Sound' magazine. Since the magazine mainly uses close-up head-shots for the front cover image; I will be using the same style of photography used my front cover. Instead of using colour for the front cover of my magazine; I'll be editing the image to be gray-scale instead so that it'll make the picture standout more from the background. The colour scheme used on the magazine is quite simple and matches with the colours used for the background colour and the photography used. However, the colours are also suitable for the headline of the magazine which is what I plan to do for my front cover image. The model for the front cover is also looking away from the camera or passed it; which is what I plan to have my model do.
